The city of Wetzlar, a former imperial cityand seat of the Imperial Supreme Court of the Holy Roman Empire from 1689 until 1806, is known for its medieval town centre and its cathedral.
 
In the summer of 1772, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was as a trainee at the Imperial Supreme Court. His novel The Sorrows of Young Werther is inspired by real events which Goethe experienced in Wetzlar.
